Adult scoliosis imaging, diagnosis and treatment
Adult scoliosis is rare, and most spine centers focus on pediatric scoliosis. However, thanks to the advanced technology we use at our hospital, we can specialize in adult scoliosis treatment options.
Adult scoliosis is generally caused by:
- The progression of teenage scoliosis
- Degenerative scoliosis (arthritis that accumulates over time and causes the spine to abnormally curve)
Spine specialists hope to detect and treat scoliosis in adolescence, so we can treat the condition before the curve of the spine worsens. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible. Scoliosis may go undiagnosed, or it may develop in adulthood.
Part of the process to diagnose and treat neck, back and spine conditions includes diagnostic imaging, also known as radiology. Following a diagnosis, your orthopedic team can move forward with a treatment plan. Sometimes, you can manage scoliosis with nonsurgical options. This could include physical therapy or wearing a brace. In severe cases and with adult scoliosis, your doctor may recommend spine surgery.
