What is aortic stenosis
When blood leaves a healthy heart, it flows through the aortic valve and into the aorta, the body's main artery. But in patients with aortic stenosis, the aortic valve doesn't fully open. Instead, it narrows, and the blood flow from the heart decreases. This narrowing increases the pressure inside the heart, which can lead to chest pain and even death.
Minimally invasive treatment options
Open heart surgery is commonly required to repair or replace narrowed valves. Many older patients, however, may not be able to undergo this physically demanding procedure. Now, TAVR is giving many of those patients an alternative.
Unlike traditional open heart surgery, TAVR:
- Is a closed-chest treatment
- Takes place while the patient's heart is still beating
- Eliminates the need for the heart-lung machine
- Doesn't require stopping the heart
Mitral valve repair
If you are not able to undergo an open heart procedure to treat degenerative mitral disease, mitral valve repair can be completed using minimally invasive techniques and may be right for you.
