Medical City Foundation hosts blood stem cell, bone marrow, and organ donations events
Through a simple and quick cheek swab process, adults aged 18 to 55 are invited to join the blood stem cell and bone marrow donation registry.
Dallas, Texas — Just a few months before the 2024 Olympics, 1960 Olympic gold medalist Earl Young, an acute myeloid leukemia survivor, is encouraging North Texans to become a champion of life by joining the blood stem cell and bone marrow registry. The Medical City Foundation is collaborating with nonprofit organizations Earl Young’s Team, Southwest Transplant Alliance and LifeGift to host blood stem cell, bone marrow and organ donation registration events at Medical City Healthcare hospitals across North Texas in April for Donate Life Month.
Through a simple and quick cheek swab process, adults aged 18 to 55 are invited to join the blood stem cell and bone marrow donation registry. Additionally, participants will have the chance to register online for organ donation, in partnership with Southwest Transplant Alliance and LifeGift. Stem cell and bone marrow transplantation and organ donation are crucial avenues for providing hope and a second chance at life to patients facing serious medical conditions and cancers, including leukemia.
The events underscore Medical City Foundation’s support of Medical City Healthcare’s commitment to the community's health and well-being.
"Everyone who joins the registry or registers as an organ donor has the potential to save lives and make a significant impact on the health of our community,” says Allen Harrison, chair of the Medical City Foundation and president of Medical City Healthcare. “We’re so pleased to bring greater awareness of the Medical City Foundation and how its supporters can join with Medical City Healthcare to make an impact in the communities we serve. Along with our world-class blood cancer treatment program, together we can create healthier tomorrows.”
Gold-medal Olympian Earl Young received a bone marrow transplant at Medical City Dallas in 2012 and was later inspired to create Earl Young’s Team, a nonprofit organization that aims to defeat blood cancer through donor awareness. He will attend the Medical City Dallas drive on April 9, where he received his life-saving transplant 12 years ago. Watch Earl Young’s story.
According to the Earl Young’s Team, between one and five percent of registrants are matched with a blood cancer patient in need. Most donors are asked to provide stems cells, a procedure that is similar to donating blood.
