Our comprehensive oncology program includes specialists who offer advanced treatment options for complex cancers, including:
- Complex GI — pancreatic, esophageal, stomach and liver cancers
- GI — colon and rectal cancers
- Lung — lung cancer and lung nodules
- Women’s — breast and gynecologic cancers
- Sarcoma — bone and soft tissue cancers
- Neuro — brain tumors and brain metastases
- Blood — several types of blood cancers
Comprehensive cancer treatment options
A wide range of treatment options are personalized for each patient and may include:
- The Center for Lung Health, where we see patients with lung nodules and have a formal surveillance program. We also treat patients with lung cancer, offer lung screening and treatment for other pulmonology disease.
- HIPEC treatments — Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a specialized treatment option for some patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Following cytoreductive surgery, chemotherapy solution is heated to 41-42°C (106-107°F) and continuously circulated in the peritoneal cavity for 90 minutes. Typically, HIPEC is offered in addition to systematic chemotherapy treatment.
- Y-90 capabilities — This unique interventional radiology treatment for liver cancer, performed on an outpatient basis, combines the radioactive isotope Y-90 into microspheres (small beads about the width of five red blood cells) that deliver radiation directly to a tumor, providing a treatment that doesn’t harm healthy cells.
- Chemoembolization as a palliative treatment for liver cancer.
- Therapy for inoperable hepatobiliary tumors.
- Minimally invasive tissue ablation using pulses of electricity to destroy cancer cells (Irreversible Electroporation — IRE).
- EUS and ERCP (Endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography).
- IORT — Intraoperative radiation therapy.
Oncology nurse navigators at Medical City
Sarah Cannon Cancer nurse navigators provide support services across the continuum of care in a program that extends across all Medical City hospitals. Nurse navigators partner with patients to help them stay educated and informed about their condition and collaborate with them to remove any barriers to care.
Navigation services don’t stop at remission: We have a survivorship program that enables patients to remain connected to a navigator after they complete their active treatment. Additionally, our programs offer genetic counseling services, psychosocial support, a lymphedema program and a cancer resource center inside the Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital at Medical City Plano.
