Surgery
Surgery is a branch of medicine that involves treating diseases or injuries by adjusting or removing organs, tissues or bones. Surgery includes both necessary procedures, like cardiac surgery, or elective procedures, such as joint replacement.

General surgery offered at Medical City Arlington
General surgeons, gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery specialists perform surgeries to treat abdominal, colorectal and GI conditions, including cancer. Some of the general surgeries we offer include:
Gallbladder surgery
Gallbladder disease refers to conditions that affect and irritate your gallbladder, including gallstones. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure.
Gallbladder conditions we treat include:
- Biliary colic
- Cholecystitis (acute and chronic)
- Choledocholithiasis
- Cholangitis
- Gallbladder abscess
- Gallbladder cancer
- Gallbladder polyps
- Gallstones
- Gallstone ileus
- Gallstone pancreatitis
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) surgery
GERD is a backup of acid or other stomach contents into the esophagus, causing symptoms of heartburn. The reflux irritates the esophagus and can lead to permanent damage over time. If medication and lifestyle changes are ineffective in treating your symptoms, you may be a candidate for GERD surgery.
Hiatal hernia surgery
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves up into the chest cavity through a small opening in the diaphragm. This condition can push stomach acid into the esophagus, so it’s very common for those with a hiatal hernia to also have GERD.
Hiatal hernia surgery is often an outpatient procedure that treats the following conditions:
- Sliding hiatal hernia
- Fixed hiatal hernia
- Complicated hiatal hernia
Robotic surgery
Robotic surgery allows general surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations with minimal incisions. Benefits of robot-assisted general surgery include:
- Small incisions for quicker healing and less scarring
- A 3D view inside your body
- Instruments that bend and rotate far more than the human hand
- Enhanced vision, precision and control
Robotic surgery skills simulator
We also have a robotic surgery simulator to help surgeons at Medical City Arlington refine their proficiency. The robotic surgery simulator allows surgeons to interact with virtual needles and objects. By providing a controlled re-creation of critical steps in instrument control, the simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a non-clinical environment.
Types of robotic surgery
We use robotic surgery to treat the following conditions:
- Achalasia (swallowing disorder)
- Esophageal cancer
- Gallbladder disease
- Hiatal hernia
- Hysterectomy
- Pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis (benign disease)
- Gastrectomy for stomach cancer
Robotic hysterectomy
If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy, you may be a candidate for a robotic hysterectomy, one of the most effective, least invasive treatment options for a range of uterine conditions.
During this procedure, the surgeon performs the operation through one tiny incision in the navel. The navel almost completely conceals any scarring. The surgery can be performed in about one hour, with a typical hospital stay of 24 hours.
Robotic myomectomy
Although a hysterectomy is a proven way to resolve fibroids, it may not be the best surgical treatment for every woman. If you hope to later become pregnant, you may want to consider alternatives to a hysterectomy, such as myomectomy, a uterine-preserving procedure. During a robotic myomectomy, surgeons remove uterine fibroids through small incisions.
Preparing for your outpatient surgery
You will most likely be asked to complete preadmission testing three to five days before your surgery. During preadmission testing, nurses will assess you for conditions that may complicate your surgical experience, and they will perform any tests ordered by your surgeon or anesthesiologist. Nurses will also discuss what to expect on the day of your surgery and how to prepare.
Day of surgery
On the day of your surgery, park in the reserved visitor/patient parking area and enter through the Main Registration entrance. All patients who do not require hospitalization the night prior to their surgery will sign-in at the registration desk.
Before your surgery, you will meet with a registered nurse in the outpatient surgery area who will administer intravenous therapy and any medications ordered by your physician. You will also have a chance to talk with your anesthesiologist and surgeon during this time.
Next, you will be transported to the operating room, and your family members will be directed to the surgery waiting room.
Recovery after surgery
After your procedure, you will be transported to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) until you are ready to be discharged. If you require an overnight stay, you will be transferred to a main hospital room after surgery.
Getting to your appointment
Before your tests, please sign-in at the registration desk located on the first floor of the main hospital. Valet parking is available at the Main Registration entrance and also at the entrance to Medical Office Building A. After parking, enter the building at the door marked "Registration" and proceed to the registration desk.
