What causes incontinence?

Incontinence can result from a variety of conditions, diseases or situations, including pregnancy, smoking, obesity, estrogen deficiency, urinary tract infections and hysterectomies.

There are several types of incontinence, which can occur individually or together:

  • Stress incontinence takes place when weak pelvic floor muscles lead to pressure on the bladder.
  • Overflow incontinence stems from a narrow urethra, often caused by swelling from pelvic surgery or childbirth.
  • Urge incontinence results when the brain perceives a need to urinate although none physically exists.

The highly skilled physicians at our hospital create a personalized treatment plan based on your individual needs. If urology surgery is necessary, we help create a seamless transition with access to a complete range of specialists and services on one campus.

  • Biofeedback therapy

Urology imaging services

You can trust the urology specialists at our hospital to provide comprehensive diagnostic services for a full range of urological conditions. Urology imaging services we offer include:

Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)

A VCUG is the fluoroscopic evaluation of the bladder and urethra after they have been filled with dye-like contrast material. VCUGs are most commonly used to diagnose vesicoureteral reflux, a condition characterized by the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the ureters toward the kidneys. Other reasons for a VCUG include chronic renal infections, urinary tract infections or hydronephritis. This procedure is also performed for end-stage renal (kidney) disease prior to a renal transplant.

Cystogram

A cystogram uses dye-like contrast material to evaluate the bladder and is used to identify any abnormalities. Most who undergo this procedure are post-operative patients who already have a catheter in place. This procedure allows the physician to ensure the bladder is completely healed prior to catheter removal.

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)

An IVP is a diagnostic test that provides pictures of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. An IVP is usually performed to identify abnormalities within the urinary tract, such as hematuria, hydronephrosis, kidney stones or a ureteral obstruction. Patients who undergo this procedure have usually been experiencing pain, blood in the urine or difficulty with urination.

Prostate cancer imaging

During this procedure, we use the intravenous (IV) injection of a radioisotope to diagnose prostate cancer or a metastatic prostate disease. Prostate cancer imaging is used to evaluate an enlarged prostate after there has been an increase in cancer markers or prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels after surgery or therapy.

Prostate/rectal sonogram

A prostate/rectal sonogram is a noninvasive procedure used to determine the size, shape and location of the prostate gland. It may be performed after a finding of elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) during a blood test and can detect cancer and other conditions in the prostate gland.

During the exam, ultrasonic sound waves move through the skin and other body tissues to organs and structures within the body. The sound waves bounce off the organs and return to the transducer. The transducer picks up the reflected waves, which are converted into an electronic picture of the organs.
