Medical City Lewisville partners with American Red Cross to host blood drive focused on donors of African or African American descent.

August 06, 2024

Medical City Lewisville is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive on Friday, August 9, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a special focus on recruiting donors of African or African American descent to help replenish the blood supply and meet the needs of sickle cell patients.

The drive will take place at:

Medical City Lewisville
Ground Floor Conference Room
475 Elm St.
Lewisville, TX 75057-3704

Community members may sign up to donate online.

The Red Cross national blood product supply has fallen by more than 25% since July 1. Summer is often a challenging time for blood donations because many regular donors are on vacation and schools, where mobile blood drives often take place, are closed. All blood types are needed. With just one donation, donors can help as many as three people. Individuals who rely on blood products may include trauma victims, cancer patients, mothers giving birth and premature babies.

Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body through a substance called hemoglobin.

People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin S, an abnormal hemoglobin type. These red blood cells are stiff, distorted in shape and sometimes block small blood vessels. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease and why blood transfusions from people with healthy red blood cells can help.

Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health. People who give blood should eat a nourishing meal before donating and must bring a photo ID. Learn more about donor eligibility guidelines here.
