Common sleep disorders we treat

A sleep disorder is a medical condition that affects sleep patterns and can interfere with your normal physical, mental and emotional functioning. Some of the more common sleep disorders are:

  • Insomnia — Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Narcolepsy — Overwhelming and severe daytime sleepiness that often occurs at inappropriate times and places
  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) — Intense, often irresistible urges to move the legs, usually when trying to sleep or a tingling sensation when you lie down to sleep
  • Sleep apnea — Brief periods during sleep when a person stops breathing, often for up to a minute and can occur 20 to 30 times or more in an hour

A lack of sleep may also contribute to:

  • Accidents and injuries
  • Behavior problems
  • Mood problems
  • Memory, concentration and learning problems
  • Performance problems
  • Slower reaction times

If you suffer from obesity, heart or respiratory diseases, depression or muscular diseases, you may be at an increased risk of experiencing sleep disorders.

Sleep problems in children

Children and adolescents need sufficient sleep for optimal health and development. A lack of sleep can have negative effects on your child's school performance, extracurricular activities and social relationships.

Talk to your pediatrician and possibly get about a referral to our program if your child exhibits any of the following signs:

  • Breathing pauses during sleep
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Difficulty staying awake
  • Problems with sleeping through the night
  • Snoring
  • Unexplained decrease in daytime performance
  • Unusual events during sleep such as sleepwalking or nightmares

In-office sleep study services

A sleep study, also called polysomnography, is a procedure to evaluate for sleep apnea and other sleep-related disorders. We monitor several different factors while you sleep, such as how long it takes you to fall sleep, how long you stay asleep and whether or not you stop breathing during sleep. After your sleep study is complete, we provide a detailed report with test interpretations and recommendations. Should specialist treatment be necessary, we can provide referrals to pulmonologists, neurologists or psychiatrists upon request.

We do everything we can to create a warm, calming environment during your sleep study. The space is designed to accommodate your rest. Each room is climate-controlled for your comfort and has a flat-screen television and Wi-Fi available. We provide blankets and extra pillows should you need them, but we recommend bringing your own pillow from home.

Sleep study FAQs

You may have questions about what a sleep study will be like, so we've shared some of our most asked questions.

Will the sleep study hurt?

No, the sleep study is painless and will not harm you.

Can I have sleeping pills?

Yes, if you routinely take sleep pills you are still able to take your medication. We ask you take your nighttime medications before arriving, unless you take something that makes you drowsy then we suggest you wait till you arrive at the facility.

What if I don’t sleep?

All patients eventually fall asleep during the sleep study, and this still helps with a diagnosis for the physician.

How can I go to the restroom?

Each private room has its own restroom facility. It is very easy to access the restroom once the sleep study procedure has started, just notify the technician when you need to use the restroom. The process will be explained further when you arrive for your sleep study.

Is there someone at the facility all night?

Yes, there is a technician available throughout the entire sleep study if you need assistance.

If I wake up early, can I leave early?

We encourage you to try and go back to sleep if possible, the technician can further explain when you arrive for your sleep study.

Can I go to work in the morning?

Yes. Our facility has showers you can use before work. We encourage you to bring your own toiletries, but towels will be provided.
