At Medical City Denton, our Hospitalists are committed to providing quality and compassionate care to our patients and their families. Whether they are completing your history and physical examination, explaining a medical procedure, providing updates on a patient's condition or planning for appropriate care after discharge home, our Hospitalists are dedicated to ensuring that our patients are comfortable and receive excellent care while in our hospital.

What is a Hospitalist?

Instead of seeing their primary care physician in the hospital, many patients are cared for by doctors called "hospitalists". Hospitalists are board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners who are specialists in providing care for hospitalized patients. They assume the primary responsibility of efficiently managing the process of inpatient care from the time of hospital admission to the time of their discharge home. Hospitalists work closely with the patient's Primary Care physician, surgeon or any other specialist to provide total case management for the entire period of the patient's hospital stay.

Why is a Hospitalist caring for me?

Your family physician may have formed a partnership with the hospitalists to better serve your medical needs, or you may not have yet chosen a family physician and the hospitalist sees you while you are in the hospital. Either way, you have the benefit of being cared for by a doctor whose practice is entirely focused on the care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists' practices are based in the hospital, making them readily available to manage your hospital stay, your treatment and follow-up with you in a timely manner.

How does the Hospitalist Service work?

Hospitalists provide patient care around-the-clock, seven days a week. No one person can do this alone, so they work as a team. You may work with just one of them, or you may meet all of our Hospitalists, depending on how long you are in the hospital.

Will the Hospitalist be my new Primary Care Physician?

No. Hospitalists do not see patients outside of the hospital setting. While you are under the care of a Hospitalist, your Primary Care physician will receive continuous updates about your condition and will also play a role in developing the treatment plan and designing your discharge plan.

After leaving the hospital, should I schedule a follow-up visit with the Hospitalist?

No. Once you have been discharged from the hospital, follow-up visits should be made with the Primary Care physician who consulted with the treating Hospitalist in developing your treatment plan during your hospital stay.

I was admitted to the hospital and treated by a Hospitalist and I'm supposed to schedule a follow-up visit with my Primary Care physician, but I don't have one. What should I do?
