ECMO Center of Excellence

Medical City Plano is proud to be recognized as a Platinum Level Center of Excellence by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) the highest international honor for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) therapy.

ECMO is one of the most advanced forms of life support, used for patients experiencing severe cardiac or respiratory failure. It temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs, allowing them to rest and heal while maintaining oxygenation and circulation.

ECMO services we provide
  • Veno-arterial (VA) ECMO: Supports both heart and lung function, often used in cases of cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest.
  • Veno-venous (VV) ECMO: Supports lung function only, typically used for severe respiratory failure such as ARDS.
  • Bridge-to-recovery or transplant: ECMO can stabilize patients while awaiting heart or lung transplantation.
  • Post-cardiotomy support: Used after complex cardiac surgeries when the heart needs additional support to recover.
  • ECPR (Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Combines traditional CPR with ECMO for patients in cardiac arrest who do not respond to standard resuscitation. ECPR can significantly improve survival and neurological outcomes when initiated rapidly.
Our ECMO program is distinguished by:
  • 24/7 access to a multidisciplinary ECMO team
  • Advanced training and protocols for critical care staff
  • Evidence-based outcomes and continuous quality improvement
  • Integration with trauma, burn, cardiac surgery, and intensive care services

Interventional cardiology

We offer minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures for faster recovery and less discomfort:

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI): Opens blocked coronary arteries to restore blood flow
  • Transradial approach (TRA): Accesses the heart via the wrist for reduced complications
  • Ventricular assist devices (VADs): Supports heart function during critical events or as a bridge to transplant
