Arlington, Texas — Medical City Arlington’s comprehensive women’s and children’s services now include maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), also known as perinatology. This advanced specialty provides expert care for high-risk pregnancies so mothers and babies can receive advanced support before, during and after birth close to home.

“Every pregnancy is unique, and some require extra attention to protect both mother and child,” says Sharn Barbarin, CEO of Medical City Arlington. “The addition of maternal-fetal medicine to our system of care means Medical City Arlington now provides more advanced diagnostics, monitoring and surgical interventions close to home, supporting families during one of life’s most important journeys. We are proud to continue setting new standards in system wide innovation and healthcare excellence.”

The addition of maternal-fetal medicine continues Medical City Arlington’s goal of providing higher levels of care for more complex and severe patient cases. The recent opening of a $144 million expansion including a new 60-bed patient tower and operating rooms added resources to support higher levels of care in women’s services as well as cardiology, orthopedics, neurology and robotic surgery.

Many fetal conditions can be addressed with surgery or medical intervention during pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists at Medical City Arlington provide expert, compassionate care for high-risk pregnancies, including:

  • Advanced fetal diagnosis and consultative care
  • Specialized monitoring and interventions for complex pregnancies
  • Access to a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborns requiring advanced support
  • Co-management with referring physicians for seamless continuity of care

Patients also have access to the Medical City Children’s Congenital Heart Center, which treats complex heart conditions in newborns. If higher levels of care are needed, maternal, pediatric and neonatal transport teams are available to safely transfer mothers and babies.
