In collaboration with the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, a pioneer in burn care treatment, the Burn & Reconstructive Center helps patients who are critically injured with multiple or severe burns survive and recover.

We also offer advanced wound care and short- and long-term rehabilitation, with the goal of providing the best possible outcomes for burn patients.

• Do run cool water over the burn
• Do use a moisturizing lotion, such as aloe vera
• Do wrap burned areas with dry, clean cloths
• Do take over-the-counter pain relievers
• Do call 911 for severe burns and serious accidents or go to the nearest ER for evaluation

• Don't panic
• Don't put ice or ice water on a burn—you can further damage tissue
• Don't use homemade salves or ointments
• Don’t remove clothing that is stuck to a burn

Burns range from first to third degree and differ in terms of severity and appearance. Here's how to tell the severity of your burn:

• First degree–Skin is red and painful, such as with a minor sunburn
• Second degree–Red, blistered, swollen and painful
• Third degree–Deep, whitish color, no pain
