Decatur, Texas — Pregnant and postpartum with iron deficiency now have another treatment option close to home. Medical City Decatur has added iron infusion therapy for eligible obstetric patients who need support restoring iron levels during pregnancy or after delivery.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common conditions affecting pregnant and postpartum patients. Symptoms can include fatigue and weakness, making timely treatment important for comfort and recovery. For women who cannot tolerate oral iron supplements or need to restore iron levels more quickly, intravenous iron infusion may be an appropriate treatment. A physician’s order is required.

“Medical City Decatur is committed to providing exceptional care for mothers before, during and after delivery,” says Dean Miller, RN, chief nursing officer at Medical City Decatur. “By offering iron infusion therapy for eligible OB patients, we are expanding access to evidence-based treatment that supports healthy pregnancies, promotes recovery and can improve outcomes for mothers and babies.”

Patient Aaliyah Saldana says the treatment made a dramatic difference.

“Before my OB/GYN recommended iron infusion therapy, I was always fatigued,” Saldana says. “Since starting treatment, I've done a complete 180. I have so much more energy, I feel great and I can finally keep up with my 2½-year-old daughter. I've completed three rounds of infusions and will follow up with my physician to check my iron levels to determine if I need additional iron infusions. The nurses at Medical City Decatur have been so caring and supportive throughout the entire process.”

The service is available to Medical City Decatur obstetric patients and requires a physician’s order. Infusions are administered by labor and delivery nurses in a monitored clinical setting.

Iron infusion therapy may be recommended for patients diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy or after delivery when intravenous treatment is determined to be the most appropriate option by their physician.

Potential benefits of iron infusion compared to oral iron supplements may include:

  • Better absorption
  • A quicker increase in iron levels
  • Less upset stomach
