Diagnosis to Hope: Supporting families navigating Down syndrome and the NICU journey

After receiving a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis, an East Texas family turned to Medical City Dallas for specialized maternal and neonatal care. Delivering two hours from home, they found support, advanced treatment, and compassion at Medical City Dallas and Medical City Children's Hospital, the only hospital in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex with an adult and children's hospital on the same campus.

After having two boys, Kylie and Timothy Allison were thrilled to learn they were expecting their first baby girl. Like many parents, they began dreaming about the future, never imagining how much their journey would stretch and strengthen them.

At their anatomy scan, those dreams were met with the unexpected news that their daughter would most likely have Down syndrome. In an instant, joy was mixed with uncertainty about what was ahead.

They later learned they would need to deliver in Dallas, two hours away from their home and two sons in East Texas. Being away from family support, facing the possibility of medical complications, and stepping into the unknown felt overwhelming.

“Once we began the process with Medical City Dallas, we felt an incredible sense of relief,” Kylie said, “From the very beginning, we felt surrounded by compassion and support. Our care team walked beside us every step of the way, offering reassurance and guidance when we needed it most.”

After a safe delivery, their daughter, Millie, was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Medical City Children’s Hospital, located on the same campus as Medical City Dallas. As the only facility in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex to have an adult and children’s hospital on the same campus, Millie was able to receive specialized care immediately while remaining close to her mom.

“Millie was born with down syndrome and is growing stronger every day,” Kylie said, “I sit here in the NICU, recently postpartum, feeling so grateful for every single person we’ve encountered along the way.”

Kylie shares deep appreciation for the teams at Medical City Dallas and Medical City Children’s Hospital, not only for the excellent care provided to Millie, but for the compassion shown to their entire family during such a pivotal time.
